Saturday 5-9-20 prayer

A Prayer a Day: Good morning, Lord. Have you found the Downing household entertaining this morning? I made the coffee and when I went to get a couple of cups, I noticed there was only 1/2 a pot of coffee, even though, I was sure I put in a whole pot of water. So, I put in about 2 more cups of water and went off happily to drink my coffee. Dan went to get each of us a second cup of coffee, and came back to report, there was coffee all over the counter, cabinet, stove, and floor. So, Dan pulled out the stove and cleaned it all up. Dan even declared it needed cleaned anyway. While that was happening, I started to think about the areas of our lives that never get cleaned up. When I went back to try to get that second cup of coffee, Dan was cleaning out the junk drawer. I assume everyone has a junk drawer; a junk drawer is the catch all for all kinds of little things, you don’t want to deal with in the moment, so it goes in the junk drawer. Lord, it appears cleaning a junk drawer, may be on the same schedule as a pandemic, since both are happening at the same time. I don’t think I have ever personally cleaned and organized my junk drawer, except when we moved 11 years ago.I’m sure this has a spiritual application: everything has a spiritual application to some of us. In Matthew 23:25-27, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “Clean the inside of the cup then the outside will be clean as well.” In other words, we need to consider what kind of junk, we are holding in our hearts, minds, and souls. We need to clean the junk out. In order to clean out junk, you have to empty it out, consider what’s there, put good stuff where it belongs, and throw away the junk. When we clean out the junk inside ourselves, if we find memories of offenses other people gave us years ago, toss those out! If we find guilt and shame from our own bad behavior, throw it away! Lord, help us clean all the junk out of us, that keeps us from honoring you and bringing you glory. Help us throw out our junk, so we can better enjoy your peace. Come Holy Spirit and make us clean: amen.
